Weekend Wrap-Up: The Hobbit movie

Am I the last person in the world to hear that they are making a movie version of The Hobbit? Well, they are! I’m so excited. I LOVED the Lord of the Ring Trilogy movies, but admit that I never actually read the books (I do plan to remedy that). However, I did read The Hobbit. My English teacher in 7th grade was a guy’s guy. He also taught Sophomore English (which I had him again for in highschool) and coached the Varsity lacrosse team (at the school where I grew up lacrosse was very big and very cool). We played lacrosse in the classroom as a study game (luckily I had older brothers who played lacrosse and used me as a goalie in the backyard — against my will– so I fared pretty well) and read what I liked to call “boy books.” The Hobbit, Hatchet, and White Fang to name a few. I would groan every time he announced the next title that we would be reading, but amazingly, I liked several of them.

As for The Hobbit, Wikipedia tells us, “In his writings, Tolkien depicted Hobbits as fond of an unadventurous bucolic life of farming, eating, and socializing, although capable of defending their homes courageously if the need arises. They would enjoy at least seven meals a day, when they can get them – breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner and (later in the evening) supper.” No wonder I like those damn hobbits so much.

My copy of The Hobbit is packed away in a storage unit filled with the rest of my childhood, so I’ve ordered another copy of it from PaperBack Swap. I’ve also ordered Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings, so I can get started seeing that trilogy through my own mind’s eye.

(By the way… how great is the 70th anniversary cover?)
